We have grown our Friends' Trust membership over 30 members for 2004, which means we are able to sponsor and interact with more learners. A BIG thank you to all those who have become involved over the last three years. We have sponsored FIFTEEN learners through Star Schools for 2003 and looking forward to seeing how else we can mentor and guide our enthusiastic group this year. We have spent time with our learners hearing about their aspirations (becoming a doctor is definitely the way to go it seems for this bright group) and understanding how best we can expose them to as many career options and people in the field over the coming year. Getting to know our learners:Friends' Trust Girl Learner Day (September 2004) Nikki organised for our Friends' Trust girl learners (and other top girl learners at Star Schools) to spend a day with her at Standard Bank. The Standard Bank Women's Forum kindly hosted these 22 girl learners on 9th September 2004. What a success! Not only were the learners exposed to real career opportunities within the banking sector, but also left inspired by those women already working at Standard Bank. At the Apartheid Museum (July 2004) Deloitte Scholar Day Programme (May 2004) On Saturday 15 May 2004, six of our learners attended the Deloitte Scholar Day at the Deloitte offices in Woodmead. Chartered Accountancy as a profession provides a real challenge and great opportunities for a young person. Dreams Workshop at Deloitte (March 2004)! Friends' Trust run a workshop to motivate matric students from Star Schools and teach them to set goals on 27 March 2004. The workshop was presented at Deloitte premises. On Saturday, Our learners this year are a talented bunch - we have poets and singers in our midst, who shared their talents with us with short performances - a real treat. We met with 10 of our 15 learners on 28 Feb 2004 at Zoo Lake - for a braai and a chance to introduce ourselves and get to know them. Brilliant time had by all!
